Embracing the WFH Trend: Tips to Create a Perfect Home Office
Not very popular with the Indian working culture, work from home (WFH) became a necessity due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Many global MNCs and other companies realized that maybe large buildings and office spaces weren’t required after all, after a few months into the WFH culture. Though some companies still have a traditional mind-set of working from an office, it was to be at reduced capacity which meant that WFH would still be part of the routine.A place like Mumbai, just like Hong Kong or New York is known for the expensive real estate and if you own one of the many 2BHK flats in Mumbai, you are lucky. Now how to turn this 2BHK into a perfect home office might not be known to all but certain ways can help you create the perfect working place.Choose the Right SpotYou need to start by deciding what area of the house has minimal disturbance, allowing you to be productive. If you have a 2BHK in Dahisar or Kandivali, chances are the main door opens right into the living room, making it the busy area for all deliveries, domestic help, family walking in and out, etc. Maybe choose an area in the guest room, next to the window with ample light. The room needs to have a door that can be shut during your zoom calls and a place for a desk, chair, and laptop.Ensure Proper LightingSome houses are lucky enough to receive sunlight in abundance for most of the day but for those apartments that are devoid of direct sunlight or only get it for a few hours – keep an overhead desk lamp or bring in a tall floor lamp and place it next to the desk. A well-lit desk will reduce eye strain and help you burn the midnight oil.It may take time to adjust to the lighting, till then play around with positioning or get a high voltage bulb.A Good & Comfortable ChairFor the first few days, your dining chair or existing couch may seem to be a good solution but over the days, you realize that you are getting slight back-pains or getting uncomfortable spending long hours on the wooden chairs. Quite a few offices have given an allowance to their employees to set up home offices. Use this money to get an ergonomic chair like the ones at offices – to maintain correct postures. For the ones that didn’t get so lucky, you can prim up your existing seating options. Put a cushion or blanket for comfort, make sure you don’t hunch and are maintaining a good posture. You can stand up and work from time to time – place your laptop on a stack of books so you don’t have to bend to see the screen.Stay Close to a Power OutletWhile considering the above options, do not overlook the need for a plug point. Your desk should ideally be located near a power outlet – for the laptop, mobile charger, printer, lamp, etc. If that is not possible, bring in a long multi-plug extension cord to plug in everything you'll need at the same time. You may think a single outlet will work but with constant work on the mobile and zoom meetings on the laptop, it is better to err on the side of caution.Good ConnectivityZoom calls, e-mails, training, webinars, e- meetings, all require uninterrupted Wi-Fi. Do a mock video call to see if the signal in the area you have chosen is good or not, if not get a Wi-Fi booster. The Wi-Fi signal needs to be strong in the area of your workspace, because without that everything falls flat. You don’t want a frozen screen and constant interruptions due to a poor signal.
Avoid working from your bed or couch, you need to separate your workspace from your place of relaxation to unwind at the end of the day. We may not realize but it does affect us subconsciously. We start associating our relaxation place with the workplace, making it difficult to relax or sleep there when we need to mentally wind down. It is your workspace at the end of the day, decorate it, add a candle, some pictures – it may seem temporary but it will be here for a while.
